I have owned and shown dogs most of my life and Basenjis for the past 11 years or so. They are a truly unique and special breed of dog. While they are not for everyone Basenjis are the ultimate dog for me and my husband. We love their endurance and stamina since we ride horses and hike quite a bit. Also much appreciated is the lack of doggy smell and very light amount of shedding. Although Basenjis are called the Barkless dog they can in fact bark - but it is not the natural repetitive bark of your average dog. Basenjis are quite capable of mimicking sounds and tend to yodel, chortle, cry or even scream when exited or upset. They are an active dog - but not hyperactive like many smaller sized dogs. Basenjis are naturally inquisitive, highly intelligent, and very fast when chasing game. For these reasons they do not generally make great obedience dogs and must be closely monitored if taken outside off leash. A fenced yard is
a must for this breed. Basenjis can be quite gentle with children and other pets, but should be introduced to them while very young. Some Basenjis can be aloof or even aggressive with strangers so it is a good idea to check out the temperament of the parents before you purchase a Basenji. Most reputable breeders will know if one of their pups would be good in a home with small children or other pets.
